Native American Forever Stamps to be released late April 2025

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has announced the release of a new series of Forever Stamps titled “Powwows: Celebrating Native American Culture,” set to debut on April 25, 2025. This collection aims to honor the rich traditions and vibrant heritage of Native American communities by showcasing the significance of powwows.

Understanding Powwows

Powwows are festive gatherings where Indigenous people celebrate their identities through dance, music, art, and communal activities. These events serve as a platform for cultural expression, spiritual rejuvenation, and the strengthening of community bonds. The largest powwow in North America is the annual Gathering of Nations in Albuquerque, New Mexico, attracting over 100,000 attendees.

Stamp Artwork and Design

The “Powwows” stamp series features four distinct designs, each capturing the essence of these vibrant gatherings:

  • Men’s Fancy Dancer: Depicts a dancer adorned in elaborate regalia, showcasing energetic and intricate movements.
  • Women’s Fancy Shawl Dancer: Illustrates a dancer gracefully performing with a beautifully decorated shawl, symbolizing the elegance of butterfly movements.
  • Men’s Grass Dancer: Highlights a dancer with flowing fringes, representing the swaying of grass and embodying harmony with nature.
  • Women’s Jingle Dress Dancer: Features a dancer wearing a dress adorned with metal cones, producing rhythmic sounds believed to have healing properties.

Renowned Cochiti Pueblo artist Mateo Romero created the original paintings for these stamps, bringing authenticity and depth to each depiction. USPS art director Antonio Alcalá oversaw the stamp design, ensuring a respectful and accurate representation of Native American culture.

First-Day-of-Issue Ceremony

To commemorate the release, a first-day-of-issue ceremony will take place at the Gathering of Nations Pow Wow in Albuquerque, NM, on April 25, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. MDT. Steve Monteith, USPS’s chief customer and marketing officer, will serve as the dedicating official. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP at the USPS website, with a limited number of admission tickets available.

Availability and Collectibility

Upon release, the “Powwows: Celebrating Native American Culture” Forever Stamps will be available for purchase at post offices nationwide and through the USPS online store. As Forever Stamps, they will remain valid for first-class postage regardless of future rate changes, making them both a functional and collectible item for philatelists and the general public alike.

The USPS’s initiative to honor Native American culture through the “Powwows” stamp series not only recognizes the significance of these gatherings but also educates the broader public about Indigenous traditions. This release stands as a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of the United States and the enduring legacy of its Native communities.
